Week 9 of Recovery: Progress, Perspective, and Trusting the Process
Nine weeks ago, I underwent hip replacement surgery. As both an Occupational Therapist and now a patient, this journey continues to deepen my appreciation for the healing process and the many factors that influence recovery.
This week, I found myself reflecting on how different recovery feels at Week 10 compared to those early days. The milestones are less obvious now. Recovery is no longer measured by learning how to get in and out of bed, using adaptive equipment, or taking those first tentative steps. Instead, it is measured in the gradual return to meaningful activities, increased endurance, improved confidence, and a growing sense of trust in my body.
One of the lessons I continue to learn is that healing is rarely linear. Some days I feel stronger and more capable, while other days remind me that recovery requires patience and respect for the body's timeline. As healthcare professionals, we often educate our clients about pacing, listening to their bodies, and celebrating progress. Experiencing this firsthand has reinforced just how important those principles are.
As an Occupational Therapist, I often talk about participation—the ability to engage in the activities that bring purpose, connection, and meaning to our lives. Recovery has reminded me that participation sometimes looks different than we expect. It may require adaptation, asking for help, modifying expectations, or taking smaller steps than we'd like. Yet each step forward matters.
This experience has also strengthened my commitment to the work I do through Align OT. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition, navigating a life transition, or seeking greater wellbeing, support often extends beyond the clinic walls. Community resources, movement, meaningful relationships, and opportunities for participation all play important roles in the healing process.
As I continue rebuilding strength and returning to the activities I love, I am grateful for the many people who have supported me along the way—family, friends, colleagues, healthcare providers, and community partners. Recovery may be an individual journey, but it is rarely one we travel alone.
Week 10 feels less about getting back to where I was and more about moving forward with a deeper appreciation for resilience, adaptability, and the power of support.
