Cancer Survivor Day: From Surviving to Reconnecting

Cancer survivorship is about more than reaching the finish line of treatment—it's about navigating the emotional, physical, and personal journey that follows. As a cancer survivor and occupational therapist, I share my own experience with journaling and the powerful role writing has played in helping survivors process their stories, build resilience, and find meaning after cancer. Supported by research and inspired by conversations with survivors through Blood Cancer United and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, this article explores how putting pen to paper can become a simple yet transformative tool for healing, reflection, and hope.

The Wake-Up Call

Part 4: The Wake-Up Call: One day, Alex was asked to approve a project that she knew was flawed, knowing it would negatively affect clients. Finally, Alex understood just how disillusioned she had become.

A far cry from the person she had once been, she knew it was time to take long-awaited action toward change.

A Moment of Clarity: Sitting alone in tears for the umpteenth time, drowning in paperwork, Alex decided to take action and accept responsibility for her health and well-being. Immediately, she felt her whole body relax. The energy shift was enlivening. She felt weights lift, her shoulders softened and tension drained as she collapsed into her chair with profound relief, possibility, and a renewed sense of freedom.

Alex, eager to learn what was ahead, slept deeply, knowing that in the morning, she would further explore the options she had been hearing and reading about for some time.

During her morning coffee time, Alex looked up social media groups, coaching opportunities, and business programs geared toward professional growth and expansion. Her eyes were opened as she learned about the vast number of other professionals with similar experiences AND the multiple opportunities available.

By joining groups and learning some options, Alex felt a renewed connection with herself and others. Her value, sense of worth, and passion were reignited.

The Decision: At this moment, Alex made a conscious decision to tolerate the status quo she felt the importance of taking control of her professional direction. Understanding the importance of investing in herself, Alex developed a strategic plan of action that works for her.

Knowing she needed support to get started and maintain momentum, she reached out for help.

Serendipitously, Alex’s path unfolded like magic. First, she connected with The Aligned Professional Facebook Group, where professionals gather to share their wisdom and support each other’s growth. In this group, Alex learned about The Aligned Professional Mini-Course! She couldn’t believe her luck! Her whole body was electrified-the more she read, the more connected she felt…She noticed her mind feeling at ease.

Self-Reflection Questions:

What’s your overall impression of this part of Alex’s story?

Can you identify with this context or environment?

Are you comfortable with your present workplace culture, if so, what aspects make you feel comfortable and what role does leadership play?

Do you feel leadership characteristics should only be displayed by people in leadership and management positions? Explain.

What leadership qualities do you demonstrate inside and outside of your professional work setting?

Are you familiar with different options and available resources that may be helpful for Alex yourself and your colleagues in times of uncertainty? Are you curious to explore the options that Alex found? We believe in simplicity-here are the links so you can satisfy your curiosity!
